The author adapts his thesis "The Role of Corporate Governance in the Reform of Foreign Partnered City Commercial Banks in China," for which he was awarded a doctorate at Australia’s U. of New
South Wales. Before presenting his original research on corporate governance reforms, he first presents chapters discussing different models of corporate governance, the historical evolution of
Chinese corporate governance, external determinants of corporate governance, the relationship between economic growth and financial systems, and the historical antecedents of the City
Commercial Banks. He then presents his own research, which he argues demonstrates a remarkable improvement in corporate governance standards driven primarily by the active participation of the
foreign shareholder, together with subsequent improved financial performance reflected in growth of bank assets, reductions of non-performing loans, and increases of capital adequacy ratios.
