In celebration of the 75th anniversary of ASIST, the pre-conference reflects on the evolution of the field of information science and technology, the historical contexts of technological
innovation, and the development of the foundational theories in information science. The opening papers revisit the role of the National Science Foundation’s Office of Scientific Information in
establishing information science as a discipline by 1966, and the birth and death of the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology. Other topics of the 18 papers include the history
of information science in Croatia and France, Lodewyck Bendikson’s work in microphotography, Norbert Henrich’s indexing work in Germany, changes to access rights in digital legal information,
