Alten provides students of sound design with a comprehensive textbook. The book is structured in four parts, including a general introduction to sound in production, hearing, and acoustics and
psychoacoustics. The second part of the text is focused on technology in sound production including loudspeakers and monitoring, microphones, mixers, consoles, and other controls, recording
equipment, and sound effects. The third section deals with production techniques and issues, and the final section provides an overview of postproduction. Alten is a faculty member of Syracuse
