This study demonstrates that not only do the authors discussed contrast the everday concerns of individuals with major events such as the retreat of the British Expeditionary Force to Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain, they question the social, economic and political systems that shape their world, recreating and reliving vicariously the paradigmatic crisis that was World War Two.
