This fifth edition approaches psychology as a discipline with antecedents in philosophical speculation and early scientific experimentation. The first three chapters cover these early
developments, while the second section focuses on 19th-century German experimental psychology and empirical psychology in tradition of William James. The third and longest section of the book
covers the 20th century. The earlier half of the century is dubbed "the age of schools" and dominated by psychoanalysis, behavioral-ism, structuralism, and Gestalt psychology. The latter half
was concerned with a return to empirical methods and active models of human agency. Finally the last section evaluates psychology in the new millennium and developments in terms of women in
psychology, industrial psychology and social justice. Psychology Press is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group. Annotation 穢2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
