Gotti (English linguistics, U. of Bergamo) explores some facets in the study of language as it is used in specific contexts rather than in general communication. The specialty of linguistics
emerged during the 1920s and 1930s by looking at science and technical discourse. He begins by exploring linguistic features of specialized discourse, in particular lexical, syntactic, and
textual features. Then he traces changing conventions from the development of specialized discourse in the 17th century, through the origins of the experimental essay, to specialized discourse
in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. The final section presents the case studies of the formation of the lexis of computer science, the language of popularization,
and aspects of individuality in The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1939) by John Maynard Keynes. There is no index. Revised from the 2006 second edition. Annotation 穢2011
