An analysis of the "single girl" pop-culture prototype of the 1960s and 1970s evaluates a wide range of source material against a backdrop of social and sexual issues to explain how controversial female characters proved that women could be accepted as strong and independent while simultaneously challenging conservative fears about societal changes.
