Based on the extensive excavation and study of the Church of St Peter's, its cemetery, and the town of Barton, this major publication offers detailed discussion of a single, complex
archaeological site in continuous use through the 20th century and declared a national monument in 1978. The main era of excavation took place between 1978-1984; many of those involved are
contributors to the present study. Among the topics of the 16 chapters are the origins and development of the town, St Mary's Church, the various phases of St Peter's, church furnishings,
medieval and post-medieval burial practices, and structural and decorative materials. Both volumes are heavily illustrated with drawings, historic prints and other images, b&w photos, maps,
and site and architectural drawings, including several fold-out drawings and ground plans. (A 2007 volume presented analysis of the human remains from the parish cemetery.) Distributed in North
