This annotated translation of Nikolay Leskov's episodic novel The Cathedral Clergy began in a classroom in Indiana, where Winchell was a student of William Edgerton. Many years later, Winchell
again took up the task of rendering this most Russian of books into English. The introduction gives details of Leskov's life and the background for this work before explaining the importance of
the novel within the context of nineteenth-century Russia. The translation is smooth, the characters vibrant and Winchell's footnotes explain the literary and political references that provide
