Rechtien (German and European studies, U. of Bath, UK) and von Oppen (German, U. of Bath) present the proceedings of a conference hosted by their university under the auspices of Women in
German Studies in September 2003 that was intended to study questions of "co-productions, dominations and resistances" between the local and the global in Germany. With such a broad topic
governing the proceedings, the specific topics of the 15 presented papers are naturally diverse and include discussion of the concept of Heimat (often translated as "Homeland"), the emergence
of the global in German village tales written from the late 18th century to the present, the role of the regional in the production and reception of the East German literature of Uwe Johnson
and Fritz Rudolf Fries, the significance of place in the writings of Christa Wolf, the role of the Vietnam War as a symbol for German anti-authoritarians of the late 1960s, the metaphor of the
global in the pop poetry of Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, the significance of public places to Germany's memory culture and as sites of contestation, and homogenous global media production versus
heterogenous reception. Annotation 穢2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
