The results of an impressively collaborative undertaking, this guide was prepared by volunteers affiliated with Preservation Virginia, Northern Neck Branch who assembled material regarding
extant (and a few "lost" sites), including grand plantations as well as modest early homes, churches, schools, and courthouses.. Within the six-counties of the Tidewater region are the
birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, and Robert E. Lee. Four hundred and sixty sites are described in text and small b&w photos, along with three-dozen maps
showing their location, and a history of the region. Generally, the cutoff date was the Civil War, but some later sites are also included. The book is Distributed by the U. of Virginia Press.
