This book carries the force of a dozen books and should find its way into the hands of anyone interested in photojournalism, the recent history of South Africa, or, simply, the oeuvre of a
great artist. Kumalo tells something of his own story, narrating how he came to photography and how he approached the serious mission of documenting his country's transition from apartheid.
Further text is by Tanya Farber, a journalist who worked at The Star for many years, which is where she met Kumalo. Text is interspersed in a complementary manner with a generous number of
full-page images, presented in an oversize format (11x11"). The images are incredibly alive, intimate, and evocative--depicting rallies, protests, confrontations, political figures, and
individuals caught up in South Africa's struggle, as well as musicians and artists. In addition there's a full section on the great boxer Muhammad Ali, whom Kumalo admired and with whom he was
friends for many years. Annotation 穢2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
