The Ara Pacis is a monument dating from 9 BC, commissioned by the Roman Senate as an altar in honor of the Pax Augusta, the peace brought about by Augustus's military successes and the
supremacy of the Roman empire. Caneva is a professor of botany and plant ecology at the Univerity Roma Tre. She closely studied the botanically related decorative elements of the monument not
only to identify the plants represented but to discover the symbolic and allegorical intentions behind their representation. This dual-language volume presents her study (Italian and English
columns, side-by-side) illustrated with numerous color plates of plants and of the decorative details under consideration. Distribution in the US is by International Publishers Marketing (IPM).
