內容簡介

The art of German painter Max Liebermann was suppressed during Hitler's Third Reich, and Liebermann is still primarily known as a Jewish painter rather than as a modern artist who happened to be Jewish. This book features new research on Liebermann's influence. Most essays frame his career within the context of the term 'modernism' and his international reputation in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some subjects addressed are Liebermann and the Dutch landscape, Liebermann and Impressionism, reconstructing his art collection through letters and documents, his portrayal of women, and collecting Liebermann in America. The book is illustrated with color and b&w paintings on almost every page, plus a few b&w photos of galleries, and includes a chronology of Liebermann's life. Material for the book grew out of a symposium organized by editor Deshmukh (history, George Mason U.) for the German Historical Institute.
