Antigone Adapted; Sophocles’ Antigone in Classic Drama and Modern Adaptation, Translation and Transformation

Cardullo takes the Greek story of Antigone through modern manifestations. Beginning with a summary of Sophocles' play, he gives a brief overview of how it was revised to fit the needs of different times and places. As examples, contemporary versions are translated in their entirety. The first, by Luis Raphael Sanchez has as its background the cause of Puerto Rican nationalism. The second is by Dominick Smole, a Slovenian writer under the Tito regime. Finally, a translation of Sophocles original play is given for comparison. Each section has a bibliography.
