內容簡介

Newlin (English, U. of North Carolina Wilmington) has assembled a diverse collection of writings discussing Hemingway's first success. As with other volumes in this series aimed at undergraduates or advanced high school students, the book is divided between critical essays written for this collection and an assemblage of reprinted criticism (original publication dates ranging from 1952-2007). There are four essays putting Hemingway and The Sun Also Rises into historical context (Hemingway's contentious relationship with Faulkner, for example); the rest of the essays provide a close reading of the novel through different critical perspectives. Some pieces are more accessible than others, though on the whole the essays offer interesting and varied takes on one of the most important works out of the "lost generation." The editor includes references, a brief biography, a chronology of Hemingway's life and a list of his works. Annotation 穢2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
