Fifty-seven focused contributed chapters provide a handbook that goes far beyond the very narrow conception of sports psychology as a profession concerned solely with performance-enhancement.
The broad scope of the subject matter reflects an understanding of the sports psychologist as someone who functions in an important way in many contexts, just as people are involved with sports
in many contexts and for a variety of reasons. Arrangement is in seven sections beginning with various issues related to counseling, assessment, theoretical and therapeutic models, individual
issues, and team-related issues. Following are chapters devoted to working with specific populations including children, masters athletes, professionals, people with diverse sexual and gender
identities, and those with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. The final section pertains to mental skills and includes chapters on activation/arousal control, imagery, motivation and
goal setting, self-talk and confidence, among other topics. Editors Hanrahan and Andersen are psychologists affiliated, respectively with the U. of Queensland, Australia, and Victoria
University in Melbourne, Australia. Annotation 穢2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
