Access to the archives was granted to scholars in 1998, and scholars began a detailed and analytical inventory of thousands of documents previously kept secret. This presentation is a selection
made with an eye toward representing various crucial events and periods in the history of the Church, beginning with St. Pius V and the miracle of the crucifix and ending with "political
religion" and totalitarianism. Each document is presented in a full-page plate along with provenance and detailed information about the object itself and its importance. Text is in side-by-side
