A picture book biography of Deborah Sampson (1760-1826), the only woman to receive a pension for Revolutionary War service, that illustrates the challenges of war from a woman's point of
view. Wearing men's clothing, Sampson enlisted in the American army in 1781, trained and engaged in combat, and after her true identity was discovered, received an honorable discharge. She
subsequently applied for, and received, a soldier's pension, and became the first American woman to tour as a professional speaker. This new biography, the first for the picture book age
group, will include recent research conducted by local Boston historians.
