內容簡介

Szczeszak-Brewer (English, Wabash College, Indiana) critically examines the works of Joyce and Conrad through the dual lenses of colonialism and religion arguing that a major influence in their work was the suppressed state of their home countries (Ireland and Poland, respectively). The text is divided into two main parts (cosmogony and pilgrimage) consisting of three essays each, followed by a general conclusion. Perspectives include false gods of imperialism in Conrad, and constitutive absence in Joyce's pilgrimage. Notes, a bibliography, and index are included.
