Financial Services and Preferential Trade Agreements: Lessons from Latin America

A senior financial economist and vice president of The World Bank, Stephanou led a 2006-07 research project investigating the experience of preferential trade agreements and financial services in selected Latin American countries. The objective was to draw useful policy lessons that can prepare policy makers involved in the deregulation of trade in financial services under future trade agreements. The findings and policy implications are presented here, along with the background papers. In-depth case studies concern Chile, the Colombia-US Free Trade Agreement, and Costa Rica.
