of the area and went on to be an influential instructor of painting. Fleming, the Southold Historical Society's director, presents a detailed biography of the painter, with many quotes from
letters and other writings and illustrated with period photographs. The inventory of his works is beautifully presented, with the works presented in the original order of the painter's ledger,
