Robin Edward Sowerby (English Studies, University of Stirling, Scotland) presents several 17th-century translations of the work of Virgil, which are shown to be the sources of the style of the
later English Augustans. The makes widely available for the first time Sir John Denham's 1636 translation of books 2-6 of Virgil's Aeneid, as well as his translation of The Destruction of Troy.
The book also includes two translations of The Passion of Dido for Aeneas, one by Denham in 1668, and one by Sidney Godolphin and Edmund Waller in 1658. Sowerby's introductions to each piece
discuss translation issues. The book includes an appendix of earlier translators, and a few b&w page facsimiles. It is distributed by Associated University Press. Annotation 穢2010 Book
