The treatise on Aristotle's Metaphysics by Ab羹 I-Walid Muhammad Ibn Rushd (1126-1198) known in the West as Averroes, is considered one of the most important of the transmissions, through
Arabic, of the works of Aristotle to scholars in Europe. It was translated in the Middle Ages into Hebrew and then Latin. However, there has not been a definitive edition printed in any
language. Therefore, this English translation, based on eight Arabic manuscripts and the earliest printed Latin translation, is the definitive edition. Arnzen, of the University of Cologne, has
previously edited and translated several other works of Averroes. He footnotes the translations with alternate readings and also provides endnotes that clarify the points made by Aristotle and
the interpretations placed on them by Averroes and other Arabic commentators. The meticulous scholarship that is demonstrated here makes this a treasure for students of philosophy and medieval
