This title grew out of the author's doctoral dissertation from the University of Texas at Austin. Eidt discusses the uses of painting in literary texts and films, using a cross-disciplinary
approach to develop a framework for four types of ekphrasis and further exploring issues such as gender roles and art's role in developing a personal or social identity. After exploring the
definition of ekphrasis in literature and film and presenting the methodology of the study, the author presents chapters discussing Goya's Sleep of Reason in poetry, drama, and film;
Rembrandt's self-portraits as seen in screenplays and film; and Vermeer and women in film and fiction, with particular attention given to The Girl with a Pearl Earring (both the painting and
the Chevalier novel), Vreeland's novel The Girl in Hyacinth Blue, and the Shield film Brush with Fate. With its interdisciplinary approach, this title would be of interest to scholars and
students in art history, film studies, and literature. Annotation 穢2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
