When the collection was first published, in 1990 by University of Georgia Press, Simms (1806-70) was not a widely known poet, and many of the poems included were published under his name for
the first time. The volume itself contributed to a revival of interest in him and his work. This expanded edition contains nearly 200 poems, among them 15 not in the first edition. Fellow South
Carolina poet and novelist Kibler also provides a new preface and introduction, and textual notes and indexes of title and first lines. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
