Martin Ramirez: Reframing Confinement

A Mexican peasant who taught himself art, Ram穩rez (1895-1963) spent 32 years confined in a California psychiatric institution, where he was able to use drawing for communication or as a means of escape. Color reproductions of his drawings are introduced by essays on reframing confinement, drawing landscapes of longing, the worlds of Ram穩rez, and scapegoats and the contours of order.
