Kaplan (acting and directing, Smith College) and Rudolph (communication and theatre arts, U. of Wisconsin Colleges) have compiled seven essays and interviews that address facets of the
depiction of mental illness in classic dramatic works by authors both well known (August Strindberg, Henrik Ibsen, Tennessee Williams) and emerging (Joe Penhall, David Auburn, Sarah Kane).
Their goal is to illuminate how contemporary writers, performers, artists, critics, teachers, and students have portrayed an array of experiences associated with mental illness. The volume has
