Foreplay

Based on Arthur Schnitzler's infamous play La Ronde, Foreplay is set in modern-day South Africa, where, despite the spectre of AIDS, the merry-go-round of sex continues in full swing. While keeping to La Ronde's cycle of ten couples - beginning and ending with the eternal representative of sex, a prostitute - Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom addresses more specific concerns such as casual violence and political and religious corruption, and produces fascinating variations on Schnitzler's original structure. The resulting play is funny, formally innovative, and utterly candid.
