Palmer (art history, U. of Oklahoma) has done an admirable job of presenting the history of architecture in a succinct and readable dictionary. Alphabetical entries are provided for eras,
styles, notable monuments, materials, architects, and architectural elements, among other topics. The entries on materials trace their use throughout history, noting the specific buildings,
locales, and architects using them. An introductory chronology provides the reader with an outline of styles, with notable examples included for each. A bibliography is included, arranged by
style and subject. The volume, which lacks a subject index, will be valuable to undergraduate students and the general reader. Originally released in hardback under the title Historical
dictionary of architecture. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
