True to the book's title, this finely produced volume presents detailed descriptions and patterns of medieval garments recovered in the 1921 excavation of the cemetery at Herjolfsnes in
Greenland. Three textile specialists reconstruct the weaving of the fabric, and the construction and original form of the garments, reconstructing versions of the garments and patterns of each.
The patterns are reproduced in full-page plates on graph paper that readers can use to sew their own reconstructions. The originals and reconstructed garments, as well as details on spinning,
dying, weaving, creating a reconstructed garment, and each of the garments themselves are discussed in the opening essay, which is well illustrated with color photos. The volume, which is not
indexed, is oversized (9x12.25") and distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation 穢2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
