The women writers of the 1960s whose works are analyzed in this study used fiction to explore theoretical concerns related to ideas of femininity and the role of women in postwar Japan. These
fiction writers' challenges to gender share much in common with the 'women's liberation' activists of the 1970s. The book focuses on the work of three writers of novels and short stories: Kono
Taeko, Takahashi Takako, and Kurahashi Yumiko. The study is limited to works published between 1960 and 1973, the end of the period of high economic growth. Some areas explored include the
masculine gaze as disciplinary mechanism, feminist misogyny, the body of the other woman, and power, violence, and language in the age of high economic growth. Bullock teaches Japanese at Emory
