Piehler (English, Drew U., Madison, New Jersey), in a revision of her dissertation (also at Drew U.), attempts a cross- disciplinary critique of Victorian expressions in art and literature of
women’s physical place in the world. The first chapter contains a short commentary on the representation of women’s space in paintings by Edward Burne Jones, Augustus Leopold, Frederick
Leighton, and others. The same theme is then examined in three novels: Charlotte Brönte’s Villette , Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters , and George Eliot’s Middlemarch . Annotation (c)
