Drawing on his translations of German editions of Freud's selected works and letters, Prawer (emeritus, German literature, Queen's College, Oxford) discusses British and American influences on
Freud's psychoanalytic thought. For example, he points out British sites that served as Freudian metaphors for hysterical patients' suffering from reminisces, and Shakespeare as a model for
analyzing the presumed link between creative works and autobiographical events. Despite his general dislike of the US, Freud also found reinforcement for his ideas in American authors including
Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, and Harriet Beecher Stowe in Uncle Tom's Cabin. Indexing includes the original German titles of Freud's writings. Legenda is an imprint of the Modern Humanities
