內容簡介

Tourism is both a boon and a bane to civilization. In this textbook designed for college courses Hall (social and services marketing, University of Canterbury, NZ) and Lew (geography planning, Northern Arizona University) present the many sides of tourism. They start by defining the topic, dividing it by reasons for travel: leisure, education, shopping etc. They then treat the impacts of tourism, sociological, economic, and environmental. The results of tourism can be positive, especially to the economy. Other positive results can be the preservation of historic areas or wildlife and an increased awareness on the part of the tourist from other regions and cultures. At the same time, providing for these tourists can increase urban sprawl and pollution, transmit disease and destructive insects (such as passing fatal illness from tourists to gorillas) and encourage the market for drugs, prostitution and child abuse. Hall and Lew point out the paradoxes and suggest possible solutions for tourism management. The final chapter on the future of tourism considers environmental changes and energy costs. A listing of a 1974 set of predictions is highly amusing. Annotation 穢2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
