Louise, a middle-aged Irish emigrant, returns to Dublin for Christmas after 30 years living in New York City. While waiting for her son to join her, she visits a friend whose home overlooks an
old monastery. The building reminds Louise of her youthful love affair with Peter, a Canadian monk, who at the time lived in the same monastery. The couple, like their predecessors in medieval
times, shared a passionate but impossible love. Although it examines the serious subject of priestly celibacy, the novel has many humorous scenes as the lovers try to resolve their dilemma.
