This book accompanies a traveling exhibition by the National Museum Wales, offering a genesis of European modern art through the lens of Welsh collectors and art historians Gwendoline and
Margaret Davies. The 47 paintings and drawings displayed were created in the 100 years surrounding the turn of the 20th century, and include at least one work each by Turner, Bonnard, C矇zanne,
Manet, Monet, Augustus John, Sickert, Renoir, Matthew Smith, and Maurice de Vlaminck, among other artists. Each painting is accompanied by an analysis, including a consideration of the painting
in the context of its chronological place in the progression of modern art and of the artist's career. Three essays in the first half profile the Davies sisters, describe the role of patronage
in the careers of modern artists, and offer a close analysis of Renoir's La Parisienne. Annotation 穢2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
