In his introduction to this reprint of the 1960 Meridian Books book of essays by French critic Rivi矇re (1886-1925), editor of Nouvelle R矇vue Francaise (NRF) from 1912-1914, 1919- 1925, Henri Peyre (d. 1988; formerly, French, Yale U.) remarks that little of serious French criticism was then available in English translation. This collection includes Rivi矇re's essays on new trends in the arts, the influence of psychoanalysis, studies on Proust, and argument against literature as propaganda.
