This exquisite look into the choral music of a little know composer. This volume can become a bench mark into the works of Villette. Dr. Burton has written a completely scholarly text with
great use of sources and musical examples to illustrate his thesis. The text serves as an invaluable resource to choral conductors who are thinking about programming one of Villette's works or
as an insight into the music through a detailed analysis. We found Chapter 5 especially valuable in Dr. Burton's advice on rehearsal and performance practice of these vocal works. His
discussion on Latin pronunciation and tempo considerations were succinct and to the point. It was good to have a list of recordings of these composition to compare, as having access to
recordings can be a great help to conductors thinking about programming these works. He also provided three useful appendices which will assist the conductor even further.
