Berg (music, Washington U.-St Louis) collects the correspondence of Berlin lawyer, amateur musician, theorist, and song composer Christian Gottfried Krause (1719-1770). The 58 letters--which
are presented in their original German with English translations on facing pages--reflect developments in aesthetics, music theory, music culture, and music making during the Enlightenment
period, and in them, he discusses the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Carl Heinrich Graun, Johann Friedrich Agricola, and others; the Berlin opera; his treatise on
the musical settings of texts; and nonmusical topics like the Seven Years' War, the Prussian court, his family, and the rising middle class. Included is correspondence with poets Johann Wilhelm
Ludwig Gleim, Carl Wilhelm Ramler, Ewald Christian von Kleist, and Johann Peter Uz. Annotation 穢2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
