Growing up in Siberia during the 1950s and 1960s, Alex yearns to become a writer and to meet Annie, his distant American cousin, but his dreams fade amid the constraints of living in a Communist society, until in 1980, he and his young family finally get the chance to move to America, where he struggles to cope with a whole new world, in a semi-autobiographical debut novel.
