Avoiding the jargon so loosely used in describing Japan's economy and challenging the assumption that its success is due to heavy government intervention, Miwa (economics, U. of Tokyo) argues that Japan has long practiced exchange by agreement rather than by coercion and that the current patterns can be explained by the standard principles of economics.
