When his father, Senator William Rudly, is murdered, journalist Jack Rudly embarks on an investigation into the crime that leads him on a twisted trail of betrayal, revenge, intrigue, and death, which, in turn, takes him to First Lady Carolyn Alden Lane, a desperate woman who discovers that she has become a pawn in a deadly bid for the Oval Office.
