British writer and painter Appiah (1921-2006) lived among the Asante and Akan people of Ghana for over 50 years, and wrote widely about them, mostly for children. She compiled this collection of over 7,000 proverbs with the help of her son Kwame Anthony Appiah (philosophy, Princeton U.) and Ivor Agyeman-Duah (California State U.-Pomona), founder of The Centre for Intellectual Renewal in Ghana, which published the first edition in 2001. Each proverb in presented in the transliterated original followed by a literal English translation and an explanation of its meaning in plain English.
