Bonds (costume design, U. of Oregon) provides a study (the first in English) of the costumes of the Beijing opera. After giving background on traditional Jingju, she describes the costumes,
their form and historical roots, and use of symbolism and color as they are used in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. She also discusses the meanings of embroidery imagery
and individual costumes, the format of the costume plot, and wardrobe of the role types, as well as accessories. Many color photos are incorporated. The book is meant for textile artists, China
scholars, and costume designers. It is based on the author's research in Beijing, Taipei, and Honolulu. Annotation 穢2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
