Falola (history, U. of Texas) and Hassan (African and diaspora art history and visual culture, Cornell U.) present the results of a September 2006 symposium dedicated to the theme of
"Nationalism and Power in Modern Africa" that was held in honor of Professor Don Ohadike and thus reflects his interest and scholarship by including papers that explore relationships between
nationalism and identities; colonial rule and resistance in Africa in general and in Nigeria in particular; the framing, articulation, and expression over time of global blackness and diaspora
nationalism; colonialism and modernities; and African modernity in culture and the arts. Specific topics discussed by the 24 contributions include the historic and humanistic agendas of African
nationalism; modernity, ethnicity, and the African postcolonial state; social history and the engendering of African history; the nationalism of the Anioma people in the matrix of Nigerian
politics; the culture of resistance to Western imperialism among the Igbo people; colonial response to disease and health in northern Ghana; music and politics in Tanzania in the 1980s-90s;
contemporary Nigerian artists' confrontations, contestations, and conversations with modernity; militant femininity in South Africa poetry; and artistic activities and the development of
