One interpretation of the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche is that true love means the attraction of desire (Eros) to a person's soul (Psyche). Drawing on sources on friendship including Plato,
Heidegger, Derrida, G. Deleuze, and Judith Butler, Rosler (foreign languages and humanities, Dowling College, New York) argues that such love for the "indeterminate other" has been sexualized
and narrowed in meaning--courtesy of Freudian psychology-- to the heterosexual norm. Lastly, the author expands on his personal experience of friendship written about in a short story titled
"Friendship Revisited" (2003). This analysis should appeal to students of philosophy, cultural studies, and gender studies. Annotation 穢2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
