Vulnerable States: Bodies of Memory in Contemporary Caribbean Fiction

In a comparative study of the vulnerable body in recent works by authors from across the Caribbean, De Ferrari (Spanish and Portuguese, U. of Wisconsin-Madison) argues that the symbolic appropriation of the body by medical, legal, and political discourses is the true origin of the Caribbean. She says that the process accounts for but is not limited to the movement of bodies and cultures that is usually the focus of Caribbean theories.
