A sample of 15 essays by German scholars, mostly of English literature but also of German literature and of musicology, illustrate the status of Shakespeare studies in Germany at the beginning
of the 21st century. Essays published elsewhere have often been passed over in favor of those that might not otherwise reach an international readership. Their topics include Lear's animal
kingdom, Oberon and Titania in the city park, Shylock on the German stage in the post-Shoah era, and the German Shakespeare Society. Distributed in the US by Associated University Presses.
