This study is the first that examines hunting songs of the northern Cree of Quebec and Manitoba. Whidden outlines their tradition of song and its place in subarctic hunting life, in terms of
ceremony, history, and survival. She records her observations from 1970 to 2000 and emphasizes the context and function of songs and song-making as much as the music. She includes the history
of Cree oral forms, discussion of recent transformations of music, and describes Gospel songs, popular country tunes in the area, and powwow music in addition to the hunting songs. The included
CD contains 52 song examples. Annotation 穢2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
